I’ve been waiting for this destination engagement session my entire life, and it’s not an exaggeration. Laura is finally engaged to the love of her life and I was SO honored when she asked me to be their wedding photographer next year!! Jack and I flew up to New Jersey this weekend to capture Laura and Jon’s love story at Kingsland Park and I. AM. IN. LOVE.
But as always, a backstory! I’ve literally known Laura my entire life because she is my godsister! Laura’s mom and my mom have been best friends for decades, so naturally, she asked them to be my godparents. Laura is a few years older than me, but we’ve always stayed pretty close! As kids, we wore matching outfits and shared our love of American Girl dolls. Entering adulthood, we’ve had the opportunity to adventure with each other in the States and even Mexico (too many stories there…). I have always admired Laura and loved any time I got to spend with her.
Laura and I both finally found the perfect guys to spend our lives with. We each shared our own struggles on this journey to find “the one”, but I am so happy where we both ended up. Now, to their story and how we ended up at Kingsland Park for their destination engagement session!
Laura has been close friends with Jon’s sister, Amber, since she was 5 years old, so it’s likely they met when they were little. But both Laura and Jon’s first real memory with each other was when they went ice skating with friends. Jon said he knew then and there that Laura was the girl he wanted to marry. His attempt to get her attention by showing off his skating skills didn’t work too well, though, because Laura thought he was too cool to hang out with her! Jon could skate laps around the ice rink faster than Laura could even go around once. It clearly wasn’t happening then!
Ten years later, Laura and Jon reconnected via social media, despite living on opposite coasts (Jon in Los Angeles and Laura in Boston). In the summer of 2017, the stars finally aligned. They were both living in New Jersey and had hung out throughout the summer.
On September 10, 2017… It was the first Sunday of football season! Laura and Jon grabbed lunch together, both dressed head to toe in their team colors. Laura is a huge Washington fan while Jon is a huge Giants fan (I’m 1000% on Team Jon here). By the end of the day Jon asked Laura to be his girlfriend despite totally hating his team.
In February of 2020, Jon proposed to Laura in Boston (just a few months after Jack proposed to me)! It was so much fun sharing the engagement period with her, even if it was just a couple months. Here is their story!
Jon and Laura went looking for rings together earlier in the year because Laura was extremely indecisive about what she wanted in a ring. Jon wanted to make sure that Laura would be 100% happy with whatever he picked. The proposal was still completely surprised by the proposal despite Laura having some suspicions.
Jon had planned the proposal for a while with Laura’s mom and Laura’s best friend, Kyle, who lives Boston. They had a trip planned to visit friends in Boston and Jon wanted to do it there since it’s a special place for her and her second home. As they were getting ready for Boston, Laura wondered if this was going to be it because he always said he’d want it to be special. As they started to get their clothes out to pack, Laura had the thought, “If he is going to propose this weekend, he is going to want to pack his own bag because otherwise I’ll see the ring. Can’t fool me!” They usually pack one bag together to make things easy.
But, that didn’t happen and Laura was baffled. Laura started snooping and went as far as checking his jacket pockets before they left the apartment. But, there was no ring to be found, so she was convinced it wasn’t going to happen. Jon knows Laura WAY too well because he actually hid the ring in one of the socks he was wearing the whole drive from New Jersey to Boston!!
Jon had Kyle suggest to Laura where to eat & set up the reservation so she wouldn’t suspect anything. He wanted to bring her to a restaurant that he knows Laura loves (Joe’s American Bar and Grill… it’s SO good!!!). They have a location on the water by with a trellis you can walk through that’s lit up at night. Little did Jon know that it was lit up in a different color with hearts and cute sayings for Valentine’s Day. Laura had never been to that location and was so excited to have a dinner with a view!
The couple met with Kyle’s boyfriend, Leo, at work to head to the restaurant. Jon said he was sweating profusely and Laura kept asking if he was feeling okay!! They finally arrived and walked through the lit up trellis. When they got to the end, Jon suggested to take a picture (Laura will take ANY opportunity for a photo!!). As Kyle and Leo took photos and video, Jon got down on one knee and popped the question! Laura screamed and of course said yes!!! As a newly engaged couple, they enjoyed dinner at Joe’s and celebrated back at Kyle and Leo’s place.
Okay, jumping WAY ahead. Right after our wedding in July, Laura and I started planning her engagement session. They wanted it to take place where they had their first date, Kingsland Park in Clifton, New Jersey. I will NEVER turn down an opportunity to travel, especially back to my home state! Plus, FALL!!! Man, do I miss seasons! Jack and I boarded our flight this past weekend to head up to our first destination engagement session of the year.
We met Laura and Jon in the parking lot across the street from the park. Unfortunately, I hadn’t had the opportunity to meet Jon until their engagement session, but I absolutely loved him! So perfect for Laura (and godsisters have to judge!!). He was very nervous for photos, but he seriously killed it. You can’t even tell!
Laura and Jon started their engagement session at Kingsland Park in beautiful fall colors that fit their personality. They both showed off their fun and adventurous sides, while also expressing their love for one another. It was perfect!! Halfway through our session, they changed into their rivaling team jerseys. Laura had purchased ones that displayed their wedding date (exactly 4 years after they became a couple!!). They also are obsessed with pizza and wanted to incorporate it into their session. We definitely went all out with this session!!
Laura and Jon, THANK YOU for allowing us and trusting us to be a part of your new life together. I am so in love with these photos and I cannot wait for your wedding at Waterloo Village next year!! Take a peek into their Kingsland Park destination engagement session in below.
