As a mom-to-be, creating your baby registry for the first time can seem overwhelming. What do you need? What’s going to be a waste after a month? Well, as a Tampa Maternity Photographer, I have the inside scoop on all things baby-related. On our sessions and in my moms group, my moms-to-be updated me on all the tricks and tips that have worked for them when it comes to being a first-time mom. From sleeping and feeding to clothing and diapers, I’ve got you covered on everything you should ask for on your baby registry (and what you really DON’T need). Let’s dive into the top items my moms-to-be loved for their little ones!
Diapers can be the trickiest part of planning a registry! You think you’ll need newborn diapers as your little one is literally going to be a newborn, right? Well, according to ALL of my moms, that’s not the case, and actually very rare! Moms suggest requesting 1-3 month diapers on your registry. If they aren’t a great fit for your little one, you’ll have enough time to return unopened boxes or bags. Someone will inevitably get you some newborn size, so you’ll be covered, but having too many newborn diapers is hard to return in that “just had a baby” phase!
While we are on the subject of diapers, don’t forget that Diaper Genie! Moms say they are the true unsung heroes for whatever your little one produces. You can get refills on a subscription for extra savings too!
The best way to clean up any mess is a burp cloth! Gerber makes burp cloths that are not only durable and won’t fall apart, but super cute at the same time! This Tampa maternity photographer is obsessed with their new designs! Cute clothes are great (and you should definitely have a few in different sizes!), but moms have said that onesies and burp cloths are truly what their child lived in the first 6 months. Moms also suggested going for swaddles and pajamas with zippers instead of buttons because you will get frustrated in the middle of the night trying to make sure those are connected correctly!
A Boppy or alternative nursing pillow will be your saving grace for breastfeeding. They will help you to better position your little one while your arms and back get a bit of rest. Be sure to get a few covers for it for any accidents!
Dock-a-Tot and Snuggle Me are the best baby loungers around. They are the perfect solution for when you want your little one to lounge nearby without needing to hold them. They are also super easy to travel with!
Obviously, bottles are important to have whether you’re breastfeeding or not. You never know what will happen! But the trick is to get as many as you can. When you are going through the exhaustion phase, the last thing you are going to want to do is wash bottles. Having plenty of bottles on hand will give you some of your sanity back!
Bassinets can be a game-changer for moms! Especially a bassinet with wheels. Moms can wheel their little one with them around the house while they do dishes, laundry, or even just relaxing outside!
Finding the perfect stroller can be hard, especially with so many on the market. Many of my moms said they couldn’t live without the UPPA Baby Vista Travel System. This stroller is made for your growing family with configurations for up to 3 children! This system also includes a car seat and bassinet.
Don’t forget your travel diaper changing pad! As a Tampa maternity photographer, I can tell you that little ones often need to be changed during a session. Having 2 changing pads is ideal, so you have one for your bag and one for home!
The Pop ‘n Go Playpen was a high priority on some of my moms’ lists! This versatile playpen is a simple-to-assemble item that works perfectly both indoors and outdoors. It is one of the most portable and durable playpens on the market.
Nervous about your little one while they sleep? The Owlet Baby Monitor is the perfect solution. This Wi-FI HD monitor has night vision and a wide-angle shot so you can see your little one’s entire room from absolutely anywhere. It also allows you to zoom in on your sleepy baby! You’ll get instant notifications to your phone for sound or motion. It also encrypts its data for safety.
Most importantly, don’t forget about YOU, mama! When putting together a registry, also think about things that you will need once the baby arrives. Nipple shields and pads will be your best friends if you are breastfeeding. Tucks Pads are also the perfect solution after having a vaginal birth for the discomfort! Stock up on nursing bras and a robe to lounge in during delivery (and honestly, even around the house!). Don’t be afraid to put a gift card for food or coffee so you don’t have to worry about a thing during those first few weeks.
